Guide to weaning and transition

Weaning is an exciting milestone for both parents and babies, as it is the time when your little one starts to explore the world of solid foods, leaving behind a diet of only breast milk or bottles. However, this process can come with certain doubts and worries.

That is why, in this guide, we will give you detailed information on when and how to introduce solid foods, as well as tips for a smooth transition from breastfeeding to other kinds of feeding.

When to start?

The right time to start weaning can vary from one baby to another, but it is generally recommended to start between 4 and 6 months of age. At this age, babies begin to develop the ability to sit up and to move food around in their mouth, which makes the transition to solids easier.

Gradual introduction of solid foods. It is important to do this gradually and patiently. Start with soft, easy-to-digest foods, such as fruit or vegetable purée, fortified baby cereals or meat purées. Offer your baby small amounts at first and watch how they react.

Keep up breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. It is essential to remember that breast milk or formula will still be your baby’s main source of nutrition during the first months of the transition. Keep breastfeeding or bottle-feeding according to your child’s needs, as milk will continue to provide the essential nutrients they need to grow and develop properly.

Encourage independence and exploration. As your baby gets used to solid foods, let them handle the food with their own hands to encourage their independence. This helps develop motor skills and promotes a positive relationship with food from an early age.

Be flexible and follow your baby’s pace. Every baby is unique and will go at their own pace when weaning. Be flexible and respect your baby’s hunger and fullness cues. Don’t worry if the process takes longer than expected or if your baby shows a preference for certain foods; what matters is offering a variety of nutritious foods and continuing to enjoy this exciting journey together.
