Postpartum bartholinitis: causes, symptoms and treatments

Postpartum bartholinitis: causes, symptoms and treatments.

Motherhood is an extraordinary experience that comes with physical and emotional changes. However, it can also bring certain health challenges, such as postpartum bartholinitis.

What is bartholinitis?

Bartholinitis is an inflammation of the Bartholin’s glands, which are found near the vaginal opening. These glands play an important role in vaginal lubrication, and when they become inflamed or infected, bartholinitis occurs.

Causes of postpartum bartholinitis

Postpartum bartholinitis can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Hormonal changes: During pregnancy and the postpartum period, a woman’s hormone levels can fluctuate, which can increase the risk of infections.

  • Trauma during childbirth: Giving birth can cause small injuries in the genital area, which makes it easier for bacteria to get in and for the Bartholin’s glands to become infected.

Symptoms of postpartum bartholinitis

The symptoms of bartholinitis can vary in severity and may include:

  • Pain on one side of the vulva.

  • Swelling and redness in the affected area.

  • A feeling of warmth in the vulva.

  • Discharge of pus or fluid from the opening of the gland.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Treatments for postpartum bartholinitis may include taking antibiotics in the case of a mild infection, or drainage or surgery in more serious cases.
